Title 5 is the State of Massachusetts environmental code that regulates septic systems
It determines among other things:
- Size of Septic System
- Separation of Leach Field to Seasonal High Groundwater
- Setbacks from leach field to well, wetlands and property lines
- Title 5 Inspection requirements
- Title 5 Inspection pass/fail criteria
In addition, many Towns have implemented additional regulations above and beyond Title 5. In most cases these add addition cost to the septic system design and installation costs.
It is important to choose a designer who understands Title 5 and can provide a septic system design that complies with the regulations and can minimizes the cost to the homeowner.
